INTRODUCTION:

A brief "history of Ralph" is in order. Ralph was officially born in 1972 with the release of The Residents "Santa Dog" double 7-inch. The label and The Residents continued hand-in-hand through the '70s and much of the '80s, thru periods of both huge growth & of economic hard times. In 1988, The Residents "left Ralph", abandoned the vinyl medium, embraced the CD format & released new product on the RYKO label (and later others - Enigma, Torso, ESD). Shortly thereafter, the name "Ralph" was licensed for use over a 5-year period; the releases of that period were done without the involvement of The Residents. This latter "Ralph" metamorphosized as new side labels (such as T.E.C. Tones / Elemental / PsychoAcoustic) sprouted up, but during that time they did not issue any "new" Residents product, just repressings of many of the original LPs on vinyl for a final time; in 1990, even the "Ralph" name ceased to be used. After the 5-year period ended in 1992, a reconstituted "Ralph" emerged with The Residents in control once again, and thus were born the modern entities of the label - Ralph America (1993-current) and Euro Ralph (1992-2008).

What follows is as complete a list of the United States "Ralph Records" releases (emphasis RECORDS - or "US Ralph on vinyl") as we've been able to assemble. It includes all of the generally available discs, special colored vinyl pressings given to mail-order customers, and fabled super-rare pressings whose numbers were limited from the start. Test pressings are listed in a section unto itself which is NOT necessarily complete, though we've documented as many as we can. There's also a small section of some of the component parts used during the manufacturing process of making Ralph Records vinyl.

This part of the list covers vinyl items with *ONLY* the "Ralph Records" label on them. It does NOT include the product of the side labels during that licensing period; some of those side label items may be found in the subsequent "Non-Ralph" sections if the artist had a tie back to the original Ralph artists (ex. - Snakefinger CDs on T.E.C. Tones). But it DOES include the items from that period that came out with ONLY "Ralph Records" on them; most all of these were the repressings of Residents classics. (Why did we put our dividing line there? I know that some collectors include everything right on thru the '90s and include the side labels too, others draw the line at 1988, still others toss all that out & only collect The Residents. Long before this transition occurred, a goal was set to try to acquire "all Ralph Records" on vinyl, in the strictest sense of those words. Ralph.... Records.... And so the list initially evolved around that same goal, it's as simple as that. We own & enjoy a lot of that other material, it's just not noted here.) And it does not include the import pressings of the late '70s and '80s - these releases were done with a similar licensing agreement (ex. - "Celluloid/Ralph", etc.); these releases ARE noted elsewhere in the list, just not in the initial section.

Following that is a section for items made during that transition period to the new companies (on the "Official Product" and "Cryptic" labels), and then other sections for Ralph's reemergence as Ralph America and Euro Ralph. Though the new Ralphs focused primarily on the CD format, they did produce some vinyl during that time & it has its own section. And finally, there's a section for the audio output (vinyl and CD) from the fan clubs, produced with cooperation from the Cryptics.

For sources, many were acquired directly from the Ralphs, from the early '80s on as they were released. We've also reviewed the catalogs & mailings that have been sent out over the years for additions, and books like "Uncle Willie's Highly Opinionated Guide To The Residents", "Cryptic Guide To The Residents" and "Official W.E.I.R.D. Book Of The Residents" were especially helpful covering the older material.

Following the Ralph sections are lists of "everything else" - vinyl and CDs by the same Ralph folks that didn't come out on Ralph, shirts, posters... you name it. Then there's some sections for fan club non-vinyl/CD stuff, and for art pieces. And following all that is a list of a few things that have NO tie to Ralph, but they've got eyeballs or skulls so they're cool...

***

We here are not big on merchandise sold with the intent to deceive people. We like "official product". Though you may see some things in this list like bootleg pins or pirate CDs, we are definitely NOT encouraging anyone to acquire that stuff. It's more the opposite, someone fooled us on it & we'd like to share that knowledge with you, so you don't get stuck too. Caveat emptor!

Wassup with this "we" stuff? This is a large time-consuming effort, I've gotta work to pay the bills too (I'm not doing this while living off daddy's money), my job makes me travel sometimes, in winter I ski alot (ok, we get snowbound so sometimes we have to just to get around), and don't let me forget the occasional vacation time with the eskimos so I can stock up on blubber. Meaning: I've got a lot of cool rare things but not as much time to work on this as I'd like (or computer skillz), so I've enlisted some help with this project. That effort includes time to work on the site (text and pictures), the sharing of many items for display here, and being the "user interface" to y'all. My assistant is "Igor" (yes, like Young Frankenstein, it IS pronounced "EYE-gore"!), and he can be reached at igor@rrroar.net for questions and the like. (Edit out the extra periods before and after the ampersand in the name before hitting send.) He works with computers all day, and I sure do appreciate him spending his free nights/weekends doing even more of it, so be nice! ;)

Igor
Igor: email rules - please make it not look like spam (RRROAR or IGOR in the title would help), and no attachments unless I know ya from earlier correspondence
and though I may be working on the site, I'm not monitoring this addy constantly, so if you pass the above, please be patient, okay?
p.s. - see my page, accessible via the site's main start page (it uses a REAL font, not this tiny crap); click HERE to open a new window to that start page

If anyone can provide info on anything missing / corrections on details, ALONG WITH VALID SOURCE INFO TO CONFIRM (not just "some guy's auction listing said so"), send an email (see the link above) and we'd be eternally grateful. And if you actually have an extra copy of the item that you're willing to part with, or any others missing here, do let me know!! Mail delivery to me out in the boonies sucks, so Igor deals with all this for me too & drives boxes of goodies up to me occasionally; I'm sure if you get it to him, he'll get it to me.
Igor: ok Chief! :)

Right now we're not soliciting for pictures of missing items - though we might take one now for something fairly obscure or rare. There are SO many item images which need to be captured, and for now we want the effort to focus on addressing the items the two of us have direct access to. Someday in the future this WILL change, once the backlog is dealt with - we want this to be as complete as possible, and we're sure that other folks can help us out in that area. But all in due time... And speaking of backlog, you'll notice that this is largely bereft of pictures of LPs. For the first couple years of our existence, we only had small scanners that one could acquire at the local electronics store. Now we finally have one that can take large-sized pics, large enough to cover the size of a 12 inch. Over time, this should fill in those vinyl sections.

Not knowing what bandwidth / server space will be needed for the site when complete, we are initially posting small-size images of things; that will be reassessed once the bulk of the site is built & we see just how it is being used by folks. We DO have larger sizes of every image we're personally capturing for this - y'all be kind, and maybe we can put up the bigger ones. Trust us, we wanna see those bigger pics posted too!

Some functional design choices were made with this site. We put content over everything, with the goal to make this list as complete and accurate as possible for the Ralph sections. And we put the visual emphasis on the items themselves; we'll admit the site is not as "aesthetically pleasing" as some can be (no fancy java or shockwave), but hopefully it'll make up for that by noting AND showing you the differences between pressings, and by being a fine collection of an awful LOT of neat stuff! "You be the judge..."

DJ Skull

There's still a flurry of activity from The Residents and many of the other groups or their offshoots. Taking advantage of the dynamic nature of the internet, this list will be constantly mutating as new items come out, old ones are discovered that were missing from the list, corrections are made, etc. These revisions will not be held back for "major updates"; we will make changes / additions as they come up, and post a revised list every few days as time permits. We won't be documenting each individual change; with the volume here, it will be enough to get the change done & gather pictures (if new & in hand). The "last modified" indicator is right on the main page you see at startup, and right below that is a "What's New" list of key categories that have had pictures added to them - so between the two, you'll know how current we are & what might be worth checking out since yer last visit. Also, we try to keep fairly current on new product - as the latest RalphAm CD or whatever comes out / we get it / we ready pics of it, we may explicitly note it by name in the "What's New" section; as we often put up more pics with more details than yer typical "one front pic" for a new item, this may be able to help you make that Buy Or Die! decision.

Oh yeah, we're down with what The Moles are doing! Big up, yo!

RULES:

This site is being setup with the goal of kindly providing Resident-ial collectors information for fans, on all different kinds of items (Official Product, known promo items, posters put out by promoters to hype upcoming live shows, most anything). We're kindly paying for server services for this project out of our own pockets, and we're not subjecting you to ads. Since we're kindly doing that, we also ask you to not abuse what we're providing for you gratis. PLEASE do not put up auction-type links & point to the actual pictures (making it appear that "our items" are your items), or take them outright and imbed them into your auction listings (more of same); one selling an item should be able to provide their own snap of it. (You CAN, however, enter a text hyperlink in a listing pointing them to this site or to the specific page for an item, so they can see one that is "like yours".) And PLEASE do not do a mass-download of the entire website in one fell swoop - if everyone did that we'd quickly run out of bandwidth. Please refer to the Copyrights page sections for other things like these that are verboten. It's sad to say that things like this have happened, and we have had to react by having auction sites take down the photos (meaning they typically cancel your auction and you lose the $ they charge to list) and block the IP addresses of offenders doing unseemly things. Play nice, kiddies!

NAVIGATION / VIEWING:

This whole page is driven by & requires Frames.
* Click on a link in the far left frame, it will offset the large list in the upper right frame.
The left frame is just a series of index points; it works kinda like an Adobe PDF, moving you to different "chapters" in a book.
* Click on a link in the upper right frame, it will open a picture / page in the lower right frame.
Most of those picture links are accessible via a thumbnail pic under the Have column, tho there are others scattered around.
(Older unconverted links may be found in a hyperlink under the Item Type column.)
* You can adjust the size up or down for the pair of frames on the right, see more of the pics or more of the list.
But if you have Netscape, don't adjust too far up, or your browser may reorient the top half BACK to the top of the list & you'll lose your place. (IE doesn't do this, just Netscape.) If you do that accidentally, you will see "Loading..." again, but it's ok to just click on a link on the left to get back into the list.

Anyway, with that structure in place, the links on the left can get you around pretty quickly. Another tip - if you wanna see the end of the regular Residents non-Ralph CDs section, click on the left link immediately AFTER that section & scroll backwards.

Viewing is best with 1024 x 768 resolution or higher; there's a lotta text to cram on the screen as it is, so going smaller doesn't help...

LIST NOTES:

This page serves as a Ralph Records "master checklist" for me and Igor (see the far left column):
* Items we HAVE are marked with an "X" and have background coloring like the rest of the line item
* Items we NEED are marked "need" and have white background coloring (this acts as an "eye"-catcher!)
Beyond "Ralph Records", subsequent lists are NOT necessarily complete.
The other lists are a composite of things that we have "access to" (me or Igor), plus some we know for sure we're missing.
In some cases we've reviewed the Ralph catalogs to build something approximating a complete list of what was "generally available".
(Shirts, pins and catalogs themselves fit this category.)
These sections may well be missing promo material and/or the one-off sweatshirt made for Ralph employee's kids!
Over time we hope to build up all of the subsequent lists so that they are also more thorough & complete.

Ralph Records are listed in order of release, regardless of type, "as best as we can".
Some items were modified/rereleased but the catalog # / year on the cover wasn't updated to match (ex. - Not Available LP)
* we've noted those with the most recent year shown
On some items the cover address was changed to "109 Minna St." but the year wasn't updated (ex. - The Tunes Of Two Cities LP)
* we lumped these rereleases together under 1983 when that address was first used

Non-Ralph Records sections have the types grouped together: first LPs, then 12" EPs, then 7"s.
CDs are listed in a similar manner: first full-length CDs, then CD EPs, then 3" CDs.
(Some groups' vinyl and CD sections are so large, that these sections are actually broken apart for easier searching.)
Sections other than vinyl, cassettes and CDs have ALL artists' items grouped together in a single large list.
All videos are NTSC format unless indicated.
All dates listed are in the US format of MM/DD/YY or MM/YY.
W.E.I.R.D. & UWEB fan club items are in two areas: an audio section at the top near the rest of the Ralph items (as they were released with the direct cooperation of the Cryptics), and some generalized fan club sections near the end of the list.
The latter sections each have a newsletter part followed by "paper" and "non-paper" items lumped together and not broken out further.
Fan club slicks and special artwork pieces are still listed within the regular non-fan club categories.
Boot and pirate crap is typically relegated to a spot at the end of a particular section.

Most of the old rare obscure vinyl & art stuff is mine, and Igor drools when he gets near it...
Igor: go ahead, rub it in :/ see how fast I type for you
...though he's got some beautiful collections of CDs & paper things, plus some art, and it will blend together nicely in this list.
Igor: that's better
Since this is "2 guys' stuff together", you frequently see indications of multiple copies on things; in most cases this is "one of mine" and "one of Igor's" (esp. on the numbered items), so 2 copies doesn't mean we have extras for trade, ya know? In other cases, such as with stock Ralph stuff, for brevity's sake we didn't bother to note that each of us have a copy, but we do. But if it says "need", neither of us have it. This may all sound confusing, but we both know what's what...

IMAGE NOTES:

The images here are also largely a composite of things that we have "access to" (me or Igor).
Pictures we did not personally gather ourselves are marked "borrowed pic"; in the future, if we do accept a pic from someone besides us, we will credit them on the page.
We try to scan items whenever we can, but of course size dictates that we photograph some things.
Sometimes scanners have "issues" with certain colors showing up improperly on the resultant scanned image; in some cases we opted for a photo instead - a lower quality image, but at least it "looks" right.
I store a piece of cardboard inside some of my flimsy 7" vinyl picture sleeves, to prevent creasing by adding strength / thickness; you may see this cardboard in some of the pics, know that it did not come with the original item.
Igor had a white-haired cat that shed like nobody's business, so you may see hairs pop up in a pic or three (at least when we get to posting the higher resolution images); he does his best to keep it out of the pics, but oh well what can you do?
Scanned images are done to BMP's and then converted to JPG's; this adds some fuzziness that is more noticeable on the small-size pics but is not so bad on the bigger ones. Again, this is a matter of server space; as long as that turns out to not be an issue, the size & quality of the images will be improved.
Taking photos sucks! (So sayz Igor.) If the item isn't glossy, we usually get a fine enough snap with the flash on... but when it IS glossy, ugh! It's so hard to get good lighting, the best angle so it comes out close to "square" / proper proportions, and in focus, all at once. We are but humans, doing our best with what we have. And we don't have a photo studio. An attempt was made to get the best pic having the best qualities in all these areas, but sometimes it's a little off in one of them - a hair fuzzy, inordinately wider on one end than the other, or a bit dark. Such is life. If we hit some technical breakthrough along the way, we'll definitely consider redoing the more flawed images...

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS:

First and foremost, the obvious...
* thanks to the Residents for creating the music, art & performance that a bunch of us enjoy
* and thanks to the Cryptic Corporation for managing Ralph & keeping the house in order
* kudos to the various permutations of Official Product distributors over the years - Ralph Records, Euro Ralph, Ralph America
* and a big up to the other musicians who had releases on the Ralph label & the artists who helped do cover art

This list had some humble beginnings, starting off in the mid-'80s as a simple Ralph Records list handwritten (!) on paper.
* a shout out to those early catalogs & books, which first documented the esoteric stuff & sparked the collecting fire
In the early '90s it changed to a computer text file, and in May 1999 it was converted to HTML but it was still just a list.
* Stefan Spang's great online collection page was the main inspiration for the leap to the Web.
Tom Timony's "Vintage Video" & its display of many Ralph rarities in the video format prompted further thought to find "another way" to integrate visual information along with the list. Seeing what some other Rez sites had done with images provided further inspiration.
* the original Rez fan site www.rzweb.net was amazing (sadly, no longer available)
All the influences (list / web / images) were combined to create this beastie in late 2000, and it's been quietly growing since then.
Most of the latter merging was done with Igor's help - first with suggestions, and later through his outright joining with me to team on this project / combining item lists where appropriate / doing most of the computer-based work.
The initial setup work was done offline on my & Igor's computers, and the site finally went live on the internet on Halloween 2003.
Igor: I also thank Rich Shupe for an article in Interactivity about CD-ROM file organization, tips in there helped a lot here!

Last but not least, thanks to the many collectors and fans we've encountered along the way. Whether it was providing an item
we've been looking for, or offering encouragement to make this happen, or just talking Rez & collecting, it was all appreciated!
* cryptic-informal here (in loose chronological order): special thanx to TR, T, DB, S, CB, K, G, P, PC, W and many others

Ok, enough psycho-babble, that's not why you're here, so on to the goodies... Enjoy!

both of these second pressings are typically treated as "the same" by collectors, this is a variation we just observed; you can tell them apart by looking at the label area, it's obvious the vinyl underneath is different in the center, and that sync's with whether it is a "Re1" or not; the "Re1"s typically have some white dusty crap on the labels too (cleaned off in the pics here)

matrix info noted here includes anything scratched into the runout groove (true matrix #s, messages), but not stamped logos (ex. - Alshire / Kdisc) or weird symbols we'll admit these are mostly generic (esp. the white label ones), but we'll show them here in the same standard way as normal vinyl; we'll include pics of the white sleeves and covers only if there was some special writing on them, with only a few noting whose writing that is (if known)
